Se invece morirà Veritas, i poteri di Ben Lo Svelto gli consentiranno di salvare la sua anima per farla rinascere in un secondo tempo. C'è da dire che Veritas è un personaggio interessante e ben caratterizzato, ma tuttavia secondario. Ben invece diventa sempre più importante nella saga dei Malazan, a un certo punto diverse trame ruotano intorno a lui. Inoltre se Veritas è caratterizzato bene, come riflessivo e ligio al dovere, Ben è caratterizzato molto meglio, come quell'irresponsabile, matto e propenso a rischiare il tutto e per tutto, vendendo promesse, cani e porci a imperatori e dei per farsi concedere favori e diritti in rapporti sempre più intricati, di cui solo lui regge il bandolo della matassa.
